8 Places in Malang You Shouldn't Miss
Malang never really runs out of places to explore. Beyond its city attractions, cafés and popular theme parks, another side of Malang leads you to crystal-clear springs, waterfalls hidden in the forest and quiet beaches along the southern coast.
If you want your next Malang trip to feel a little different, these eight destinations are worth going beyond the city center for. Some require extra travel, but that is often where some of Malang's most memorable experiences begin.
Short on Time? Start with These
You do not need to squeeze everything into one trip. Malang covers a large area and several of these destinations are far from the city center. If time is limited, choose based on the kind of experience you want.
Sumber Pitu Tumpang
Sumber Pitu is not the kind of attraction where you simply step out of the car and arrive at the main view. From the vehicle access area, visitors continue on foot for roughly 2 kilometres before reaching the waterfall area.
Once there, several natural water flows emerge from a green cliff, creating a landscape that feels wilder than a typical commercial waterfall attraction. The forest, sound of rushing water and secluded setting make the walk itself part of the experience.
Coban Srengenge
Coban Srengenge stands out because the experience does not stop at a single waterfall. The area has three waterfall levels, allowing visitors to choose how far they want to explore depending on their time and energy.
The first level is relatively easy to reach. The next section takes you deeper into a quieter green setting, while the third level involves more natural and challenging terrain.
Coban Ciblungan
If you want a waterfall escape without a demanding trek, Coban Ciblungan is a more relaxed choice. Several streams of water flow into a natural pool surrounded by greenery.
The attraction is also relatively comfortable for a casual visit, with parking, food stalls, gazebos and toilets available around the area.
Umbulan Tanaka
Umbulan Tanaka offers a much slower pace. The attraction developed around a natural spring near the slopes of Mount Kawi and has since been arranged with pools, bridges and relaxing areas that blend into the surrounding village scenery.
Its main appeal remains the clear flowing water and green countryside. It is a good stop when you want a break from trekking or long drives around South Malang.
Sumber Sirah
Sumber Sirah is known for its clear natural spring water. In good conditions, the bottom of the pool and aquatic plants are visible from the surface, making swimming here feel very different from visiting an ordinary swimming pool.
You do not need to spend the whole visit in the water. Sitting beside the spring under the surrounding trees can be just as enjoyable, especially if you want a slower day.
Teluk Asmara Beach
If you want one view that instantly shows how different South Malang feels from the city, Teluk Asmara is one of the best places to start.
The beach is surrounded by small offshore islands and green hills, giving the coastline more depth than a typical open beach. From higher ground, the shape of the bay becomes the real highlight.
Banyu Anjlok Beach
Banyu Anjlok has one very good reason to be on this list: freshwater drops from the cliff directly beside the beach. In one place, you get both a waterfall and a coastal landscape.
Reaching the area takes more effort than visiting a beach with direct vehicle access. That makes Banyu Anjlok better suited to travelers who enjoy the journey as much as the destination.
Wedi Putih Beach
Wedi Putih Beach is a good final stop for travelers looking for a quieter stretch of coastline. Located in South Malang, it features pale sand, blue-green water and vegetation surrounding the beach.
It is less well known than some of Malang's main southern beaches. That is exactly the appeal if you value peaceful surroundings more than complete facilities or busy crowds.
A 3-Day Malang Itinerary
These eight places are spread across different parts of Malang. Instead of spending most of the day driving back and forth, group your itinerary by area.
| Day | Area | Destinations | Travel Style |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | East Malang | Sumber Pitu, Coban Srengenge, Coban Ciblungan | Waterfalls and trekking |
| Day 2 | West & South of Malang City | Umbulan Tanaka, Sumber Sirah | Relaxed water attractions |
| Day 3 | South Malang | Teluk Asmara, Banyu Anjlok or Wedi Putih | Road trip and beaches |
For the third day, there is no need to force all three beaches into one itinerary. Choosing one or two gives you more time to enjoy the coastline instead of spending most of the day on the road.
Tips Before Visiting Malang
- Check the weather before leaving. Waterfalls, trekking routes and South Malang beaches are much easier to enjoy when conditions are good.
- Group destinations by area. Tumpang, Ampelgading, Wonosari, Gondanglegi and South Malang are in different directions.
- Carry some cash. Not every natural attraction consistently offers digital payment options.
- Wear suitable footwear. Shoes with good grip are safer for trekking routes and wet paths around waterfalls.
- Leave early for South Malang. The distance from the city makes an early start much more comfortable.
- Do not overcrowd your itinerary. Enjoying two places properly is often better than rushing through five destinations in one day.
There Is Much More to Malang Than the Usual Stops
A trip to Malang does not need to end at the same attractions every time. Sumber Pitu reveals its wilder side, Sumber Sirah offers the calm of a clear natural spring, while Teluk Asmara and Banyu Anjlok take the journey all the way to a coastline that feels completely different from the city.
If you have a little more time, these journeys beyond the busiest areas are exactly what make Malang worth returning to.
